In Macau, many piling sites are not simply hard rock. From top to bottom there is marine mud, loose sand and backfill, then boulders and cobbles, and finally granite. In such ground the borehole wall easily collapses, causing block falls, jamming and buried tools. A DTH hammer with simultaneous casing (casing-while-drilling system) drives the steel casing to the hole bottom as drilling proceeds, so the wall is supported at all times. This method is well suited to Macau's complex ground.

How does it work?

The DTH hammer inside the casing drives an eccentric or concentric bit to break the rock.

The drilled diameter is slightly larger than the casing outside diameter, so the casing follows by its own weight and force transferred through the casing shoe.

The casing supports the full drilled depth; loose and broken zones are never left open.

After drilling, the rebar cage is placed and concrete poured; the casing is extracted or retained as required.

Why does Macau ground need borehole support?

Marine mud, saturated sand and water-sensitive residual soil disintegrate when exposed to water.

Boulders in completely decomposed granite cause deviation and obstruct the casing.
